Fashionista I am not….

While fashion is a big part of photography, it is not something I am interested in. However, in school I can’t turn down assignments, so for this week I don’t want to show normal fashion type photos. I want to make stuff that isn’t considered “normal” fashion look like it could be.

This first one I got the idea from a photo that I can not find again nor do I remember the artist. But I do know it was a paper shredder with a paper heart going through it. However, I wanted it to be like and instant dress forming as it is being sowed. Kind of making tins of work happen instantly.

For the second idea, I got it from a couple of different photographers. One was Margot Cavin. I liked this image but I wanted to make it more non-fashion and have either a leather fabric background or have the boots on a leather jacket.

And the last one I thought up and then managed to find something very close to what was in my head. The image I found is by Lancater Photographics and I really liked how they had the clothes popping out of the bag.  My idea was to make fun of, in a way the amount of money dads give their daughters for clothes.

Editorials, Harder than you think

Since I didn’t meet the needs for my next assignment I have brought out my inner blood loving self and tried to come up with ideas that tell a story about Child Sports Injuries well. This assignment required much more research than I originally thought. Kids get hurt every day so how could sports be any different. But to keep it sweet and simple here are one more idea for my Editorial on Child sports injuries.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In my search to come up with a good editorial I found a few photographers. Jamey Guy doesn’t do sports editorials but he does do really good editorials. He also has a lot of work from Georgia which is stunning. He shows the beauty in the country that not many get to see. Another photographer I found when I was looking for ideas for the “Mimic the Master” shoot was Clint Blowers. I like how most of is work tells a story in very simple ways. Something I have trouble doing.

Editorial Photography

Editorial Photography. Before this week I dis not really know what this really was. I don’t read many magazines or newspapers so I never gave what gets put in those much of a thought. Even though I do enjoy looking at the pictures. So this assignment to shoot an editorial picture about a certain topic. Each of us in the class have a different topic, and I picked Child Sports Injuries. Not something easy for me, mainly because of I’m very accident prone and never really did sports. However, after looking it up some I noticed that child injuries are very common. So here are my ideas for a “editorial”  piece on Child sports injuries.

For number 1 my idea was to play off how kids may or may not always ware safety equipment. With skates and bikes many kids will fall, sprain something, cut a knee, anything. However parents still let them ride these no matter how well they know the risks.

Number 2 is simple but it is also the most played sports by kids. Soccer is also the sport that had the most injuries. So with this one I just wanted to have a ball and shin guards but have extreme side lighting to give it a gloomy feel.

Number 3 would involve lots of Photoshop. This one is Martial Arts belts that spell out “sports good?” on a mat similar to those used. This idea may be blunt in the idea I’m getting across but it may be interesting.

Number 4 is about swimming. Not many people think that swimming is very dangerous. However, form experience it is. You can hit your head on the wall, get ear infections (swimmer’s ear) bruise your leg from getting in and out of the pool and so on. So with this idea I just thought a few of the basic items swimmer’s use propped up with a light in front.

Mimic the Master: Photo shoot wrapped up

Another assignment finished up this week. All in all I think it went well. Except for trying to get the mushroom to work out right. This shoot was pretty easy, light wise. From what it looked like in the original picture, I figured there was at least one light. I tried this to start out with. I was using Photogenic strobe lights at a pretty low power setting. My main light came out of the light kit at 55 but I later powered it down to 31 with a medium sized soft box on it. After many tries of trying to get the bottom of the mushroom to be light well and have detail I realized I needed a second light to give it just a bit more light. I had this light powered to 44 and had diffusing material over it to soften the light. Here are a couple shots of how I had my lights set up.

 

Now, about my Camera, I only have one camera body, a Canon EOS Rebel XS. Old I know, but its lasted me this long and its the first camera I’ve bought myself. For this shoot I used a 35-80mm lens set at 35mm with an ISO of 100. My aperture and shutter speed were f8 at 1/125. In English that means I had a lot of light coming through my lens with a decently fast shutter to capture any movement, if there had been any. And lastly here is the final out come of my shoot. I am very happy hearing other classmates say that it looks so close to Ted Morrison’s picture and hopefully he will enjoy having someone think so highly for his work to try and recreate it.

 

Mimic the Master

This assignment was hard to choose a subject for. There are so many great photographers out there that I couldn’t pick just one to recreate. After asking family and friends, and also due to money issues, I choose to Mimic a photo done by Ted Morrison. I found many images I would like to try to recreate, and I may another time for practice but this post is about Ted. I looked up some of his work before I even put the picture up f0r an idea for this assignment. What I liked about his work is that it is all different. He took what, for an example, this image.

He took random pieces of food and lined them up in a perfect order to not look cluttered or seem out of place and formed a question mark. When I see this it makes me think of how many times I go to the kitchen for something to eat and even though I have enough food to make something with I can never decide. All the pictures I like of his make me think. And hopefully tomorrow I can do well on this shoot.(Again pictures came from Ted Morrison’s website.)

Assignment 2: Mimic the Master

We all see those shots that make us think “Hum that’s cool, I wonder how they did that”. Well, we get to try that. Mimic the master is just that, take a picture and recreate it. From the product, background and the lighting. So here are my ideas for this shoot. And all pictures have come from either the photographer’s website or from foundfolios.com and have links to where I got them from. I have only cropped out some of the website using Paint.

This first one I like because of the uniqueness of the image. The photographer is Ted Morrison and after looking through a lot of is work, I like how he sees thing in a different way.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The second picture that I can’t stop looking at is by Dan Goldberg. Since the website has the pictures as two put together it is mainly the one on the right I am interested in. While it may be a bit hard to recreate, I like the preciseness of the placement of everything.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For all of these “Mimic the Master” ideas, I can’t stop thinking how cool the concepts are for all of the ones I have been looking at. This next one was done by Sam Kaplan and after looking through all of his stuff that is online I love all his ideas.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This next one I find interesting because of how society is and how people go into a job that they know they will hate. And while it may not be completely appropriate for class I still like the concept of the picture. This one was done by Clint Blowers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And Lastly, in case the previous one can’t be done, here is my last idea for this shoot. This one was done by James Worrell. What I like about this photographer is how every thing he shoots makes you think, hence the name of the the gallery.

Assignment 1: Final Product

The time has come to finally show off the end result of my first shoot of the semester. I was pretty nervous, yet excited about this one. I wasn’t sure how it would end up. But thanks to the help of Lauren Jester I was able to get the image that I saw in my head. I was able to set up pretty quickly and didn’t take much time in deciding how the lights should go, the placement of both the wine and the cupcakes. However, I soon realized that my original idea, wine with a cupcake tree, was too much. With the help of Mr. P I went with y second choice and just had a few cupcakes next to the wine. The main problem I had was loosing the color in the wine, I originally wanted a gel but couldn’t decide on the color due to wanted to make sure it complemented the color of the bottle. So before I revel the end result here is my lighting set up.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Its hard to see but the light on the right has a Snoot on t to shine light only on the label. There is also a light on a cinder block with a diffusing material and a pink gel over it. This greats the pink light and the diffuser softens the line created by the light where the table connects at the bottom and straight top pieces.

Assignment 1: Part 2

I have not always been the greatest planer. However, this semester I am going to be better about that. So, starting with this first shoot I wanted to make sure I had a plan B. I knew that my original plan might not work, it never does, so I looked at other ways to design food. Now I should have done this before I did the shoot but better than not doing it. I’m going to write this as if I haven’t yet so that I can research a photographer who photographs wine and cupcakes. However the best images that I can find close to what I wanted is from the actual Cupcake Vineyard website. I can’t find on the website who the photographer is but I love how all the shots of the wine are simple and show off the wine beautifully.

Assignment 1: Liquor

Not everyone can say they get to bring alcohol. However we are only shooting it. Our first assignment for the semester is to shoot alcohol and for my technical blog I’m starting this semester with my ideas for this assignment. Please excuse my horrible drawings. I’m trying to be a photographer, not a  painter or anything involving drawing.

First idea I got while at work. Its pretty much just a play off the name of the wine, lots of cupcakes, a bit of color with the gels.

The Second I got out of the randomness of my mind. I’ve always liked the James Bond movies and I thought a play off those would be fun to try. A big step out of the box for me and defiantly different.

Third one came from just living in the South my whole life. I thought it would be fun to do a spoof on Rednecks. Maybe a bit elaborate but I wanted to be creative.

And Lastly is number four. Nothing to big about that one, just simple. But to me that’s how I see Whiskey, simple and clean.

 

 

Change can be fun

So its that time of year again…. Time to start back into the grove, study hard and be TOTALLY stressed out. Yup that’s right, schools back. Now with this new semester, new classes and an ever growing way to spread the world of photography. For our Commercial 2 class normally we would put together a notebook of all our shoots including lighting, film used, prop set-up, all that fun stuff. This time however, my teacher thought to change things up. Now we are going to do a blog. And what better way to help others by posting this all. Now I just have to remember to post. So for those that read this, be prepared for a bit of a change in the things I put up. Hope ya’ll still enjoy.
